Everything You Need To Know When Choosing a Doormat Size

Everything You Need To Know When Choosing a Doormat Size

Choosing the perfect doormat size comes down to a few technicalities and personal details. What area will the doormat fit in? What shape mat would complement the space best? Where should the mat go? What size makes the most sense for the area? These are a few of the many questions you should consider when choosing the perfect doormat size for your space.

Why Do You Need a Doormat?

Doormats are more than visually appealing accessories or décor for your home or commercial business. Doormats, or welcome mats, serve as functional pieces that remove or grab onto dirt and moisture from foot traffic so that it doesn’t go inside the home or property. Having a welcome mat helps you keep your home or business tidier by subconsciously encouraging guests to stomp dirt or other debris out of their shoes before entering. This is especially true if it has been raining outside or they’ve had to walk across a particularly muddy or dirt-ridden path.

Doormats can add the finishing touch to your property and add a homey and inviting air to the space. There are plenty of designs, shapes, and sizes to suit your aesthetic taste and design. Finding the correct size only takes a few simple steps, and this guide is here to help you.

Use a Size Guide

Referencing a size guide for your doormat is the first step in determining which size of front door mat is appropriate for you. There are size charts available for reference online when looking to purchase one, and you can measure your doorway or entryway of choice to compare to the size chart.

Size guides tell you the exact measurements and dimensions of the welcome mats and allow you to make an informed decision based on your specific needs. If you have a large entryway, a small doormat will not be visually proportionate to the space.

When choosing a doormat size, a good rule of thumb is to get a doormat that is at least three-fourths, or 75 to 80 percent, the width of the doorway where you will place it. This provides a visually proportionate appearance that makes sense for the doorway.

Choose the Perfect Size

Just how big should your doormat be? This can be an especially daunting question when you’re responsible for picking the right doormats for your business. When you’ve compared the size guide to your own measurements, you can finally begin considering the perfect size welcome mat for your doorway. Do you have a double-door entryway? A standard front door? A slide screen door? A large automatic entryway?

With your measurements and size guide, you can pick what size is ideal for your area of placement. Start general, then begin to narrow it down. For example, if you are using a double-door entryway, consider a large entry mat. If you own a retail store with large double-door automatic sliding doors, you may want to consider an extra-large welcome mat. You can then examine the measurements for each size, whether small, medium, or large, and examine the exact measurements to determine if they align with the three-fourth-width rule. If not, you want to size up or size down.

Choose a Shape

After deciding the front door mat size you need, choosing a shape is another fun part of the process. This is where you can get creative and intuitive with the design and how it will fit with the home or business. With so many shapes to choose from, you have an endless variety of styles that can fit your taste. Do you want a half-circle? An oval? Rectangle or square? Different shapes complement different areas of placement around the home. Carefully consider the spaces available to you and what would make the most sense in terms of aesthetic design and visual proportions.

Area of Placement

Choosing where to place your welcome mat is another important factor in determining your doormat size. Will you place it at your front door entryway or back door? Do you need one for both the inside and outside of the door?

If you have a business, will you only place the doormats outside the entryway of the establishment or directly inside? What about the bathrooms of your establishment? The water fountain areas? You must consider the areas of placement to properly assess what size you need and if it’s appropriate for that particular area.

Consider Width

When choosing a doormat size, the most important factor to consider is the width. The width determines how the mat will fit in proportion to your entryway, and you have to be exact in calculating the measurements for the proper width. This is the step where the three-fourths rule is most important. If the welcome mat is too small or too wide, it may look out of place or not function the way you intend it to. It may not stay in place (due to being too small and easily moveable) or may not pick up as much dirt as a larger mat. The width determines the visual appearance of the mat in comparison to the doorway.

Consider Height

The height of the mat determines the amount of coverage the front of your doorway has. The longer the height, the bigger the mat may appear. If you want a more square-shaped mat, you may want to get a welcome mat with a longer height and a shorter width. If you want a more rectangular shape, you may want to get a mat with a longer width and shorter height. When it comes to less traditional shapes, you should simply measure from the very top of the material to its bottom point to determine how long you want the height and how much coverage you desire.

When choosing a doormat size, there are ultimately a few factors to consider before making your purchase. You should consider the area where you will place the doormat, what shape you’d like to have to best complement the space, the width of the mat in comparison to the doorway, and the height of the mat. You can use your resources, such as a size guide and measuring tape, to get accurate and exact measurements for your space. Using your measurements is important for ensuring visual proportion and aesthetics. On your next shopping trip, consider these tips for choosing your doormat.
